THUR 6/14: Words & Music

Somerville Flag Day
At some point, I saw that Michael Tarbox was scheduled to play tonight at Cantina La Mexicana, but I can't confirm. If you saw it on the calendar and he doesn't show, the food is excellent.

And cheapness through Sunday is on the calendar.

THUR 6/14

7pm
Drawing Workshop w/ Deborah Putnoi
at Trident Booksellers & Cafe, 338 Newbury St, Boston (Back Bay)
FREE

Yes, everyone can draw. In her book "The Drawing Mind: Silence Your Inner Critic and Release Your Creative Spirit", artist Deborah Putnoi wants to help people overcome the internal blocks to creative thought.

You can get some of her general concepts ahead of time, or just bring a pencil/pen/charcoal & paper and see where things go. The bookstore also sells stuff like this, if one is unprepared.

THUR 6/14

7pm
Marjorie Williams & Beatrice Peltre, "Markets of Paris" and "La Tartine Gourmande": Readings
at Porter Square Books, 25 White St, Cambridge (near Star Market)
FREE

One big reason to love France is the food. We use the word 'cuisine' because it's a French word! One book explores the many fresh food markets in the City of Lights, and the other is a recipe book that could transport your taste and smell across the Atlantic.

THUR 6/14

7:30pm
Melvern Taylor & His Fabulous Meltones
at Toad, 1912 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Porter Sq)
FREE

On a random Thursday night I walked by Toad when Melvern Taylor & His Fabulous Meltones were playing, and it was packed. It seems natural to down a few pints and kicking back to the breezy, old-time acoustic swing of Melvern Taylor's ukulele with the Meltones chugging along.

People love the ukulele power just about every other Thursday night.

THUR 6/14

8pm to 10pm
Bill O'Connor Quartet
at Arts at the Armory Cafe, 191 Highland Ave, Somerville (Spring Hill)
$10

There is bossa, bebop, and ballads at the Armory tonight. I wish the group didn't only have a MySpace, but it's good music.

THUR 6/14

9:30pm
Sand Reckoner, Ryan Lee Crosby, Future Carnivores, Royal Wedding
at Great Scott, 1222 Comm Ave, Allston
$9 / 18+

If you think of Ryan Lee Crosby as a delicate balladeer, then you're in for a pleasant surprise with his new album. From the first pass, the thoughtful lyrics are now more often couched by in funky rhythms and beats that gives a refreshing view on a fantastic songwriter.

In other transformative news, Future Carnivores is the current project that includes Bo Barringer (formerly of MEandJoanCollins that rocked my world) and a couple people of Guillermo Sexo into an electropop outfit that offers an interesting mix. Even Royal Wedding emerged from The Big Disappointments, added a Scottish bassist and heads into a leaner, angular noise.

And Sand Reckoner does a good job of bringing the classic, trippy blues-rock sound and make it sound modern.
