SAT 7/2: Brits, Boats, Horror, Rock, Blues

If you forget your frisbee at home, a CVS or Walgreens will probably be closer than a Cheeseboy (South Station, South Shore Plaza, or Milford, CT).

On the other hand, they won't give you a free frisbee if you buy a grilled cheese this weekend (supplies last, limit one per customer).

My cheapness through Monday is on the calendar.

SAT 7/2

Noon to 4:30pm
"Redcoats on the Common"
at Boston Common, Boston
FREE

It's America's 235th birthday weekend, and the British are going to party like it's 1775 on Boston Common. Most of the redcoats may be in the NW corner near Charles & Beacon.

11am -- Arrive at Long Wharf & Formation
11:30am -- March to the Common via State, Court, and Tremont Streets
Noon -- Tactical Demonstration
12:30pm to 2pm -- Medical & Military Demonstrations
2pm to 2:30pm -- Skirmish with Colonial Militia
2:30pm to 4pm -- Medical & Military Demonstrations
4pm to 4:30pm -- Skirmish with Colonial Militia
4:30pm -- Break camp
The reenactors keep coming back to the Common even though they know the UK is going to lose, so give them kudos for that.

SAT 7/2 (thru MON 7/4)

11am to 11pm
Extreme Sailing Races
at Fan Pier, about 30 Northern Ave, Boston (Seaport)
FREE

I went to the Volvo Ocean Race a couple years ago, and watching the boats sail was an enjoyable sight. From what I've read, the action will be bigger and faster with this race.
11am to 1pm -- Courageous Sailing Events
1:45pm -- Parade of Sail
2pm to 5pm -- Extreme 40's racing
4pm to 7pm -- Splash Time
5:30pm -- Extreme Sailing Prize Ceremony
7pm to 11pm -- Entertainment on Main Stage: Entrain
So it seems like boats are going to be on the water from 11am to 5pm. Maybe longer...

It's going to be a groovy time, because Entrain will undoubtedly bring the good times.

SAT 7/2

8pm
A Night of "Horrotica"
at Somerville Theatre, 55 Davis Square, Somerville
$9

Feature: "The Disco Exorcist"

Shorts: "Simone", "Amy's In The Attic", "Dinner Date"

They call it a night of "Horroritca", but I think the meant "Horrotica". Say them out loud, and you'll understand why I changed the title of their event.

I watched a clip of "The Disco Exorcist". At first glance, it's hard to say if this is a good horror movie. It is a great idea at the very least of combining the sex and horror and give it a cheap '70s patina. And it seems like they add that other level of characters watching/making movies.

SAT 7/2

9pm
Young Adults, Ringo Deathstarr, The Vandelles, Thief Thief
at Great Scott, 1222 Comm Ave, Allston
$9 / 21+

Oh, well. I think I'm in the majority when I say Ringo Deathstarr is the star of the show. It's just brilliant, godlike, buzzing musical euphoria. They've got a great name as far as puns go, and this could be the best My Bloody Valentine album you've never heard.

It's a great lineup with chilled Vandelles, proggy/mathy guitar-drums duo Thief Thief, and punky Young Adults. Good stuff!

SAT 7/2

9:30pm
Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers
at Smoken' Joe's BBQ, 351 Washington St, Brighton (Brighton Center)
$5 / 21+

I really love Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers. They do something similar to when I wanted to be in a Muddy Waters/Howlin' Wolf kind of band. These folks do it with a verve and finesse and freshness that makes it so good. And Erin Harpe is a fantastic blues guitarist.

It seems like more of a restaurant with a small bar area, but maybe I need to check out the scene tonight. I hear the BBQ is really good.
