There are a couple readings/talks at the BPL tonight, but they weren't that 'thrilling'.
If you're looking for some tips on finding a great job, you might try RSVP'ing for a (free) 6pm panel discussion at Emerson (as part of FutureM, see Rock Shop below).
Happy Birthday (and Un-Birthday) to all the people out there, especially the lovely Amy!
I don't know why -- there are a lot of semi-recurring events on today's cheapness. [shrug]
--------------------------------------------------------------
WED 10/6
4pm to 6:30pm
"A Conversation with Spike Lee"
at Metcalf Hall, Second Fl, Sherman Union, 775 Comm Ave, Boston (BU campus)
FREE
If I could go at 4pm, I'd be interested in what Spike Lee was going to say. The Roxbury International Film Festival and The Color of Film Collaborative co-present this event where clips from his films will be shown and Spike discusses his work.
"Seating on a first come, first served basis."
WED 10/6
5:30pm to 9:30pm
College Night 2010
at Four Short Food Films
at Enormous Room, 567 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
FREE
Feat: "Yum Yum Yum", "Chef!", "Buffet: All You Can Eat Las Vegas", "This Is My Cheesesteak"
It's hard to say how crowded this will be. I went to last month's Food at 24fps session when there was a chocolate tasting after the film, and about 40 people showed up.
I got the feeling that most viewers were Harvard students or faculty, so maybe they're more interested in a campus event than going to Central Square.
On the other hand, Magner's is tonight's sponsor so a free cider is likely to be had before or after the short films about food (total running time: approx. 2 hours).
WED 10/6
7:30pm
Rock Shop #8: "A Social Media Experiment"
at Middle East - Downstairs, 480 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
FREE / All Ages
Performances: Aaron Perrino, RIBS, Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling, Lagoon
Other panelists: Charlie McEnerney (Well-Rounded Radio), Clay N. Ferno (LeaguePodcast), Steve Theo (Pirate! Promotions), Marty Watts (JitterJam)
These "Rock Shops" are geared towards musicians, but I imagine that anyone trying to promote a creative endeavor might gain something from most of these sessions.
Tonight they've partnered with FutureM, a cutting-edge marketing seminar that's happening all week, they're kicking things up a notch.
You can read all about it on the Eventbrite page, but the gist is that a bunch of kickass artists are going to perform after some participate on the panel about effectively using social media.
My impression is that bands are playing full sets; it's going to be a full night of rock!
WED 10/6
8pm
"Satan Hates You!" plus TBD shorts
at Somerville Theatre, 55 Davis Square, Somerville
$5 / 17+
The impressive horror source All Things Horror usually presents an ongoing indie-horror film fest on the first Wednesday of the month, and they've got something every Wednesday in October. If the quick-edit-with-thrash-metal trailer for "Satan Hates You!" is any indication, this might be nightmare-inducing cinema tonight. (And Michael Berryman is in it!)
WED 10/6
9pm
Jordan Valentine & the Sunday Saints
at Milky Way Lounge/Bella Luna, 284 Amory St, Jamaica Plain (The Brewery Complex)
FREE / 21+
Along with horror in Somerville, big and honking old-school soul and R&B music courtesy of Jordan Valentine & the Sunday Saints will be bringing down the house on the first Wednesday of the month at the Milky Way.
They're starting tonight and will play a couple sets.
WED 10/6
9:30pm
"Everyone's Crazy Bout Laura Cortese"
at Lizard Lounge/Cambridge Common, 1667 Mass Ave, Cambridge (between Harvard Sq & Porter Sq)
$7 / 21+
Fantastic singer-songwriter-violinist Laura Cortese is anchoring every Wednesday in October as she and her guests bring some folky goodness. Cortese has an "Acoustic Project" that seems something like a string quartet and a "Vocal Trio" project as well, and they should be performing together tonight. Also featuring Ari & Mia Friedman.
WED 10/6
11pm
Rock 'N Roll Bingo: Halloween Kickoff
at Model Cafe, 7 N Beacon St, Allston
FREE
About 6 games of bingo to win stuff like free drinks along with "spooky sounds and gory treats" as well as "some seasonal desserts".
I'm guessing it might be something like Halloween cupcakes; the cupcakes were delicious on the night I played bingo. If I lived closer, I'd go again. Besides the first Wednesday of the month at the Model Cafe, they also do a Rock 'N Roll Bingo happens on the last Wednesday at the Milky Way.

Hey! I've been following your blog, it's great! I'm doing a blog on things going on around Boston, too. You might find this post interesting http://basicallybostonne.blogspot.com/2010/10/dark-side-of-boston.html - there's a $12 tour around the North End, telling the tales of the darker side of Boston. Especially with the recent premiere of "The Town," I think that your readers might find the tour interesting. And it's pretty cheap!
Cheers!

Thanks for the heads-up, Christina! I've been meaning to try one of these Boston by Foot tours...
