WED 9/15: Words, Stars, Songs

Keeping it short today in hopes of kicking butt early and often for the weekend.

Hey, the MFA is free every Wednesday evening! I did go to the MFA a couple Wednesdays ago, mainly to see the Richard Avedon photo exhibit, and it was pretty damn cool. It was even better that I didn't pay $20! (There was a free drawing session with supplies available too...)

Interestingly, 2010 is a big year for Mexico with the Independence bicentennial and Revolution centennial. Cantina La Mexicana is celebrating in some way tonight from 6pm to 10pm. I don't really know how, but the food is excellent and probably the most authentic I've had in Boston. (Thanks, Sooz.)

If you want to spend a couple bucks more, you can hear some sweet tunes from Jukebox The Ghost and Drink Up Buttercup at Great Scott -- or go a bit mellower with Laura Veirs and The Watson Twins at TT the Bear's.

WED 9/15

6pm
Gary Shteyngart, "Super Sad True Love Story": Reading
at Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St, Brookline
$5

This story sounds like a hilarious take on a depressingly dystopic vision of the near-future in an alternate universe not too different than our own...

Tickets are available through Brookline Booksmith.

WED 9/15

6pm
"Former White House Spokespersons": Conversation
at JFK Forum, Littauer Bldg, 79 JFK St, Cambridge (Harvard Kennedy School)
FREE

Feat: Ari Fleischer (Press Secretary, '01 - '03), Dee Dee Myers (Press Secretary, '93 - '94), Camille Johnston (Dir. of Comm. to Mrs. Obama, (Jan '09 - Aug '10)

Do they provide news to the fourth estate? Or are they strictly defenders of the administration? Mostly the latter, but maybe they'll say something interesting.

Moderated by the relatively even-handed and sometimes insightful David Gergen.

WED 9/15

8:30pm to 9:30pm
Astronomy Open Night
at Coit Observatory, 725 Comm Ave, Boston (BU campus)
FREE

It's could be a clear night, so why not see the stars through telescopes and binoculars from the roof of a BU building? Observatory Night takes place on Wednesday nights through the end of the month.

To get to the observatory, go to the 5th floor; the stairwell to the Observatory is located next to room 520. (There is no handicap accessibility.)

WED 9/15

10:30pm
Banditas, Joe Fletcher & the Wrong Reasons, Bunny's A Swine, Cathy Cathodic
at Plough & Stars, 912 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$5 / 21+

With the addition of Cathy Cathodic, this show gets more eclectic and exciting. Added to the rootsy rock of Banditas and Joe Fletcher and the messy indie-pop of Bunny's A Swine, Cathodic usually gives a colorful performance while strongly rapping and rhyming with a lot of personal style.
