MON 6/15: Wizard of Oz, Rock

Yep, yep, yep. The week begins again.

--------------------------------------------------------------

MON 6/15

7pm
Evan I. Schwartz, "Finding Oz": Book Discussion & Film Screening
at Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St, Brookline
$9.75 / $7.75 child, senior

Some don't find the special magic of watching movies on the silver screen, but there some films that should be appreciated in a theatre at least once in your life. "The Wizard of Oz" is one of those movies, and it might renew your love for sitting in a dark theatre and traveling to a far off land.

Evan I. Schwartz has written "Finding Oz: How L. Frank Baum Discovered the Great American Story", so he'll discuss the creation of the original novel and Baum who 'discovered' Oz and its famous wizard. During the pre-film discussion, he'll also provide some insight about story.

MON 6/15

9:30pm
"Critter Carousal": Benefit for Animal Rescue in Boston
Feat: Croquet, M.G. Lederman, Audrey Ryan, St. Helena
at Great Scott, 1222 Comm Ave, Allston
$9 / 18+

This might be the third benefit show for animals in the last month. I guess it's better than doing nothing for abandoned pets and the like.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to get there early, because you wouldn't want to miss the amazing Audrey Ryan. The live version of St. Helena didn't blow me away a couple months ago, but they've got plenty of nice songs and deserve to be heard. As much as Audrey Ryan's vocals flutter around the upper register, M.G. Lederman sings low and gravelly while playing delicate tunes on his keyboard.

I may be wrong, but I'm guessing Croquet might go last (or first) based on listening to the experimental rock project of St Helena's guitarist (who may have organized the show).

Besides helping local non-humans, you might win a prize of some kind...

MON 6/15

10pm
The Egos, Link Wrowe & The Wrowemen, Kermit's Finger
at Charlies Kitchen, 10 Eliot St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
$5 / 21+

It's a punk-rock party. Besides 3 rockin' bands, it's the birthday of another band's drummer who'll be in the house. How often do you see a Link Wray tribute band these days? Pretty much when the guys from Classic Ruins do their thang. (There's a rumor that Johnny Angel might sit in with the Wrowemen before The Blackjacks' mini-reunion tour this week.)
