WED 5/13: Winedown, Dance, Rock

Dan Deacon, at Middle East tonight
Okay, here's something before it gets too late...

--------------------------------------------------------------

WED 5/13

7pm
Granta Launch Winedown w/ John Freeman, Ha Jin, William Pierce
at Harvard Book Store, 1256 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
FREE

When I was a book club member many moons ago, they accidentally sent me a couple Granta issues. I think one had a Hunter S. Thompson piece, so I kept them; but I realized this is a heavy-duty lit (fiction & non-fiction) magazine. It seems like the American editor and two of the authors reatured in the new edition are located in Boston. Ha Jin and William Pierce will likely read excerpts, then people will mix and mingle. From personal experience, wine is really served...

WED 5/13

9pm
Dan Deacon & Ensemble, Future Islands, Teeth Mountain
at Middle East - Downstairs, 480 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10 / All Ages

Dan Deacon the one-man party machine is spreading the love and bringing a dozen or so of his buddies to play in a band on this tour. I read a couple reviews; while the vibe and sound is still there, it seems like hardcore fans might yearn for the electronica days of yore. The band probably gives Deacon a chance to interact with the crowd more, and that may or may not be a good thing.

As you'd expect, Dan brings a couple experimental Baltimore bands (in different directions) to open.

WED 5/13

9:30pm
Eldridge Rodriguez, Lovers Muggers & Thieves, Paper & Sand, Spectator
at Great Scott, 1222 Comm Ave, Allston
$10 / 18+

Ryan's Smashing Life has put together another damn fine show. If you're searching for a high quality-rock-to-dollar ratio tonight, look no further. I guess it's the birthday of once-and-future Beatings frontman Eldridge Rodriguez, and he's celebrating with a set of excellent solo band material that's still noisy and compelling. Thanks to googling "Lovers Muggers & Thieves", I found out about a book about the Combat Zone in the '60s -- thanks! Paper and Sand sling it loud and in your face.
