Hey, it's a good weekend to go out if crowds bother you, because throngs will be heading down to Harpoon Brewery for their St Patrick's Festival...
--------------------------------------------------------------
SAT 3/7
11am, 2pm, 7pm
Boston Massacre Reenactment
outside Old State House, 206 Washington St, Boston (Govt Center)
FREE
Young people are doing it at 11am and 2pm; adults at 7pm.
The reenactment might be different than what you remember from history class -- who calls 5 dead a massacre? -- but this is where it happened. Watch one of the crucial episodes in the American Revolution.
SAT 3/7
Noon
Annual Bacon Eating Contest
at Atwood's Tavern, 877 Cambridge St , Cambridge
FREE
In celebration of the Atwoods weekend brunch, 10 people will find out how much bacon they can scarf down in 5 minutes. I don't know if I'll be able to compete, but just have a feeling I could win it... I doubt I'll be in the mood for a bacon-flavored cocktail, but there will be an array of bacon victuals available.
SAT 3/7
6pm to 8pm
2nd Annual Beer and Cheese Tasting
at BRIX Wine Shop, 1284 Washington St, Boston (South End)
FREE
I love beer. I love cheese. I sing the praises of cheapness and frugality, so I can spend more money on tasty beer and cheese.
Beers to matched with cheeses:
-- Dogfish Head "Red & White" with Garrotxa, Spanish goat's milkRemember -- "Two's company, free's a crowd..."
-- Avery "Hog Heaven Barley Wine" with Cabot Clothbound Cheddar, Vermont cow's milk
-- Hoppin' Frog "Gulden Fraug Abbey Ale" with Wavreumont, Belgian cow's milk
-- Shmaltz Brewing Co. "Rejewvantor" with Idiazabal, Spanish sheep's milk
-- Michael Plank "Heller Weizenbock" with Langenegg Rasskase, Austrian cow's milk
SAT 3/7
6pm to 10pm
MGFest Installation Showcase
at AXIOM gallery, Green Street T, ground floor level, about 150 Green St, Jamaica Plain
$7 Suggested Donation
Besides the current "Collision14:pov" exhibit, there will be a screening of digital animation in association with the "Motion Graphics Festival" that is being held this weekend. It's been a combination of presentations and workshops. I expect the videos will be looped for the evening.
I think this will be more interesting than the 80's Movie Anthem Midnight Sing-Along at the Coolidge Corner Theatre...
SAT 3/7
Benefit in Memory of Jeanne
Hallelujah The Hills (12:15am), Keys To The Streets Of Fear (11:15pm), Mr. Sister (10:15pm), Tony The Bookie Orchestra (9:15pm)
at TT the Bear's Place, 10 Brookline St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$10
Unfortunately, Jeanne the wonderful bartender has gone to the Big Rock Club in the Sky. Four really cool bands are getting together for what I imagine is a fundraiser to defray the bills left behind.
Btw: What will be extra cool about this gig is that these bands share a lot of members, so you'll hear many of the same like-minded musicians tackle different repertoires throughout the show.
SAT 3/7
9:30pm
The 4th Annual Baron's Ball.
w/ The New Alibis, Mung, Jay Allen, Steve the Farmer & the Murder Balladeers
at O'Brien's, 3 Harvard St, Allston
$8 / 21+
Why is it the Baron's Ball? That's not important. There's much rock and fun to be had. Whenever Mung emerges from hibernation, it's something to consider.
