MON 3/9: Film, Jazz, Acoustic, Rock

Burn, with Marlon Brando. Howard Zinn appears at Coolidge Corner tonight.
For the record, I'm neither enjoying the change in weather or the clock's "spring forward".

--------------------------------------------------------------

MON 3/9

7pm
"Burn!" w/ Howard Zinn
at Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St, Brookline
$9.75 / $6.75 seniors, children

Howard Zinn will introduce what is apparently one of his favorite films. It's a little seen Brando movies by the director of "The Battle of Algiers". The film company had pulled the title from circulation for being too radical, but that's probably why Zinn used to show it to his students at BU.

It should be interesting to see a provocative 1969 film on colonialism and racism set in 19th-century Portuguese Caribbean colony -- especially since it might be easy to see parallels in recent US policies.

MON 3/9

8pm
"The Barbaric Yawp"
at Jordan Hall, 30 Gainsborough St, Boston (New England Conservatory/Fenway)
FREE

Sometimes when I think of avant-garde jazz, I hear some whacked out stuff that means the guys know how to play but it rarely moves you. I heard a track by professor/artistic director Anthony Coleman; there were tightly packed chords, but there was an excitement.

Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" is the inspiration of the performance. Do you want to get inspired too?

The spotted hawk swoops by and accuses me, he complains of my gab and my loitering. I too am not a bit tamed, I too am untranslatable, I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.
It's not necessary, but quoting Whitman is like vaccine for soul decay... The passion of American poetry, innovation, freedom of expression, the yawp of our special gumption, and all that jazz is the inspiration.

MON 3/9

9:30pm
The Accident That Led Me to the World, Amelia Emmet, Cuddle Magic, Alive and Awake
at Great Scott, 1222 Comm Ave, Allston
$8 / 18+

Maybe your Monday hasn't begun as well as you would've liked, but this is a chance to end it well. I became aware of the Grinding Tapes Recording folks last month, and they foster wonderful acoustic sounds. And there are four really good acts tonight.

I felt happier when I hear folky-pop trio The Accident That Led Me to the World despite (because?) not having a drummer. Amelia Emmet of Mr. Sister might be playing alone tonight, but it's her special vocals and lyrics that are the core of that group. Let me break the news: Cuddle Magic is not a death-metal band; it is a large-ish chamber-folk group. Alive and Awake will probably be louder than the others, but they have a cool indie sound.

MON 3/9

10pm
Naked Gods, Chris Warren & the Doldrums
at ZuZu!, 474 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
FREE

This should be a cool show. Naked Gods are passing through from North Carolina; it looks like they were going to NYC and decided to add a day in Boston. Darn that Chris Warren who's been in a bunch of bands (currently Viva Viva, etc) that always sound good.
