Hey, it was a damn good speech on Thursday that didn't just appeal to Democrats. (Hello, swing voters / independent thinkers!) Let's take a listen to a slice of Thursday's address. Iraq is one of the biggest issues to me, so...
Since I seem to screw up these Sunday night posts, here's the link to YouTube.

Thru MON 9/1: Free Bowling and Pool at King's
SUN 8/30 & MON 9/1
11:30am until 2am
Free Bowling & Billiards
at King's, 50 Dalton St, Boston (Back Bay)
FREE
King's sent me an email saying bowling and billiards would be free this weekend.
I tried to confirm the details (i.e. I sent one email asking about it) and didn't get an answer. I assume you might hhave to pay for shoe rentals, but maybe not... Buy a lot of drinks in appreciation of the free fun...
They also said "21+ after 6pm".

I don't remember how I stumbled on this site, but it's a not-yet-comprehensive database of the folks that are in the kitchens
of the world. When you go to a restaurant, you can find out who made your tasty meal.
My friend, Ryan, turned me on to the "Not For Tourists" book series on a visit to New York. When a Boston edition came out, I bought one and carry it with me almost everyday. Now I find out that PDF's of the whole book is available online! Every city they publish!

Advance Notice, FRI 8/29: Art, Video, Tarot (& free booze!) and My Thoughts: Last Month's Reception
6pm to 8pm
Egypt Urnash, "78 Evasions: The Urnash Tarot": Opening Reception
Bill Domonkos, "Wormhole": Video
at Space 242, 242 E Berkeley St, 2nd Fl, Boston (South End)
FREE w/ RSVP
Interest in tarot might enhance your experience at the reception, but the work looks pretty cool on its own. The artist, Egypt Urnash, has created her own set of tarot cards, so there will be 78 prints on display. To kick the tarot theme up a notch, there will be tarot card readings by Anya Webber; and she's serious about it. (I'm not...)
This would probably be enough stimulation, but filmmaker/multi-media artist Bill Domonkos has traveled to the Bay State from the Bay Area for the evening which includes a retrospective screening of his work -- including 2 new pieces. I watched a few clips on his site, and this is amazing stuff. It is very cool how he manipulates old footage into something very fresh and compelling. As he told The Globe, he usually doesn't come out to festivals or such things.
You have to RSVP, so get on it today. I know it won't look current, but you'll be okay.
So I went to Space 242 last month:
There were 2 artists in the exhibit, and everything was quite interesting. I have to say I was drawn more towards Dave McMahon's emotional robots and askew portraiture that might be residents of Beetlejuice's netherworld; but I also enjoyed Chi-Yun Lau's alien landscapes and some of the other illustrations (zombie roller derby!) that were familiar from the pages of The Weekly Dig. All the paintings & prints were for sale (in the $40 to $300 range). I almost bought one, but the person in front of me bought the exact painting I wanted.
The gallery is mainly the front area of the Dig's office. It was well-attended and rightfully so! There was cool art with free grub and booze. I wasn't bashful, and no one else was because they ran out of beer in about an hour. No problem -- I enjoy vodka drinks! (I'd love to work at a company that has a bar. Really, it's a dedicated bar area.) For a few dollars in tips, I left feeling very happy.
If you're wondering where it is, it's next to Medieval Manor.
Here are some pix I took (click to open a slightly larger version):

THUR 8/28: Movies, Comedy & Rock
I know more people read Bostonist than this thing, but consider clicking on my Ben Sisto interview around 2pm today. Reading it is optional...
--------------------------------------------------------------
THUR 8/28
7:30ish (Sunset)
"Planes, Trains and Automobiles"
at Boston Common (NW Corner, near Beacon & Charles St)
FREE
"Planes, Trains and Automobiles" is simply one of the best comedies of all time. The jokes are hilarious, and you can feel the heart in it. I'm not going to check if the BPL showed this in their Summer/Xmas series, but they should have...
I'm pretty sure TripAdvisor did this last year too. Catch a free movie, and you can enter to win a free trip. I bet you can get some travel info too, if you were interested...
I'd consider getting there early to get a good spot... maybe have a picnic... make sure their location is correct...
FYI: You can help a young person in need (that miniscule "jet-setter on the go", just kidding!) by bringing gently-used luggage to benefit Suitcases For Kids. The luggage would be for young people who move to different foster homes and things like that...
THUR 8/28
8:30pm
"The Friends Of Eddie Coyle" w/ Intro by Paul Sherman
at The Video Underground, 385 Centre St, Jamaica Plain
$5 Suggested Donation
"The Friends Of Eddie Coyle" is an awesome Boston crime movie featuring one of the best big-screen badasses, Robert Mitchum. Film critic Paul Sherman will tell you all about it in his introduction. He's written a book about our town film history called "Big Screen Boston", and I've read good things about it. He'll be signing books too, so I think you can buy the book for the low, low price of $16. (Maybe you can talk him down to $15...)
I saw a movie behind The Video Underground last year, and it has a great vibe for a summer night outdoor screening. There are maybe a dozen rows of folding chairs, I think the screen was a wall (perhaps an actual screen)... The donation is strongly suggested, so just pay it. Then you walk behind the counter through the back of the store. BYO drinks (any kind) & food.
THUR 8/28
9:30pm
Punk Rock Stand Up
w/ Dan Crohn, Ken Reid, Dave McDonough, Tim King, Mass Bay Colony Punks
at Abbey Lounge, 3 Beacon St, Somerville (Inman Sq)
$8
So, I doubt you'll hear jokes about The Ramones. The night is meant to be something a little different than most comedy shows. People might feel free to try new stuff... I doubt anyone will wear a tie and a blazer... No Cosby sweaters... or stuff like that.
I can say unequivocally that Ken Reid is one funny dude -- and it's not because he might read this... I haven't heard Dan Crohn's stuff, but he definitely looks funny and that's half the battle. Right? I believe you'll already be in a better mood to yuck it up without the damn two-drink minimum. (Why do comedy clubs have a two-drink minimum? Because they can...? I'm sure it's hard to make it as a club owner, but I don't feel like getting reamed by overpriced drinks. Anywhere.)
After the comedians, the Mass Bay Colony Punks will bring the revolution rock -- and I mean Revolutionary War. Their songs have colonial-period themes. It rocks. It's fun. After some beers, I bet it's funny too.

Well, this is it. The last night of The Motion Sick residency at Church. I dig TMS, and this might be the strongest support of the month -- maybe better than Night #1. You must listen to Mieka Pauley, she's so much more than a folkish female singer-songwriter. I think there's crack in her songs... Or something, man! Brendan and Nate of Scamper have put together the Brendan Boogie Band, and (from what I can tell) they are still churning out some great pop-rock nuggets. (I think it's an 'electric' performance...)
As with every week, The Motion Sick wrote a song related to theme, and I think I like "I Grew a Mustache" [mp3] for 'Stache Wednesday better than "Aquaman's Lament" last week. Hear all of the songs on the residency page.
Seems like a good way to celebrate the certain Red Sox victory at Yankee Stadium...
WED 8/27
5:30pm
"Christmas in August"
at Rabb Lecture Hall, Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St, Boston (Copley Sq)
FREE
I think I'd rather be outside tonight, but it's the last night of the Xmas series, and you can do whatever you want... The big kahuna of Christmas movies is up tonight: "It’s a Wonderful Life".
The shorts consist of: "Twelve Days of Christmas", "Max’s Christmas", "Mole and the Christmas Tree" (apparently a Czech classic), and "Christmas Tree".
WED 8/27 & THUR 8/28
7:30ish (Sunset)
Wednesday: "Roman Holiday"
Thursday: "Planes, Trains and Automobiles"
at Boston Common (NW Corner, near Beacon & Charles St)
FREE
I'm pretty sure TripAdvisor did this last year too. Catch a free movie, and you can enter to win a free trip. I bet you can get some travel info too, if you were interested...
Seriously, "Roman Holiday" is a classic that would be fun to see in the Common. "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" is simply one of the best comedies of all time. The jokes are hilarious, and you can feel the heart in it. I'm not going to check if the BPL showed this in their Summer/Xmas series, but they should have...
I'd consider getting there early to get a good spot... maybe have a picnic... make sure their location is correct...
FYI: You can help a young person in need (that miniscule "jet-setter on the go", just kidding!) by bringing gently-used luggage to benefit Suitcases For Kids.

TUES 8/26: Bowling, Mixer, Folk
It not just because I stuffed free food & booze there last week -- but I'd consider eating at Bella Luna/Milky Way if you're thinking of going tonight.
I love that block of JP in general, within a block there's Brendan Behan Pub, Alchemist Lounge, El Oriental de Cuba, Tacos El Charro... So many coices, and that's just off the top of my head.
--------------------------------------------------------------
TUES 8/26
9pm
Bowling Tournament
at Milky Way Lounge, 403 Centre St, Jamaica Plain
FREE / 21+
It's not just Monday this week -- the Milky Way is also having free bowling on Tuesday this week for a Coors-sponsored tournament. The prizes will likely be Coors items -- and maybe there might be a free beer or two... (You never know!)
I was there last night, and there were several posters for this candlepin tourney. Your team might not get signed up before it fills up, but you're sure to have a good time. You could still pick up some Coors promotional (liquid?) material...
The free bowling continues after the tourney for those who don't need to be alert on Wednesday morning.
Some details:
- 4 people to a teamDJ Andrew from Pants Yell! is also starting a regular DJ night ("...And Don't The Kids Just Love It?"). His guest DJ's this month are DJ Casey (Pants Yell! drummer) and DJ Mark Robinson (of Teenbeat Records).
- up to 12 teams can play
- first come, first serve
- no advance sign-up
TUES 8/26
6pm to 10pm
NetParty Boston Free Launch Party
at The Estate, 1 Boylston Pl, Boston (The Alley / Boston Common)
FREE w/ RSVP! ($20 w/o RSVP)
I don't necessarily enjoy "young professional" mixers, so wouldn't think of going to this if it wasn't free -- but that shouldn't stop you! There will be complimentary apps from 6pm to 7pm... The mixing continues until 8pm, then the music gets loud for dancing. (I have a feeling they'll send you a lot of email if you sign up...)
Update: Jeff from NetParty says they don't send a lot of emails. Also the music won't get loud during the social time, but I assume it'll get loudER if you stay long enough...
TUES 8/26
8pm
Vagabond Van
at Toad, 1912 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Porter Sq)
FREE
Greg Klyma & Tom Bianchi are ending their August residency with a bang -- and a thud and all sorts of musical sounds. Besides their guitar and bass, they've got keyboards and drums to round out the basic band. Then they're inviting a load of people to jam with them and they're basically playing from about 8pm to closing. Should be a killer night of rootsy goodness!

Intern means "I don't pay you", right?
Hey, I thought I'd throw this out there...
If you need to do an internship and you:
- Like writing and/or surfing the Web...then get in touch. (Wow, I didn't think I could think of so much stuff...)
- Love music, art, film, theatre and/or any other cool stuff
- Have an eye for a bargain
- Are in the Boston area
- Are too lazy to find a real internship
I would be pretty flexible about the "program" details. If you help me, I'll definitely write a positive report / recommendation / whatever. I might even buy you a drink...
Here's your first assignment: Find my email address is in the header.

MON 8/25 & TUES 8/26: Music, Bowling, Mixer
Well, I had a fun weekend... I hope you did as well!
--------------------------------------------------------------
MON 8/25
Scarce (10:10pm), Dave Mirabella (9:20pm), Dan Cray (8:30pm)
at TT the Bear's Place, 10 Brookline St, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$3
Scarce was one of those Boston bands of the '90s that was oh-so-close to making it *Big-Time*, but it was one of those classic "singer has a brain aneurysm" stories... It all starts to connect as I'm writing up this little blurb -- I remember reading how Joyce the bassist decided to write her memoir, and this led to regrouping with Chick the singer to bring the band back. They're doing one their recent duo sets before some full band gigs in Europe.
Monday nights are the "Other Side Of The Bear Acoustic Series". Even acoustic, this should be quite a sight -- and sound. Dave Mirabella is quite the fine rootsy rocker as well, and I enjoyed Dan Cray's songs.
MON 8/25
9:30pm
Viva Viva, The Men
at Middlesex Lounge, 315 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$5
It's a full-on ball-to-the-wall rock show in a spot that normally hosts dance nights. When they do have bands, it's usually a good lineup (like tonight).

Sunday Night Vide-O-bama! #6
Wait a second... There's a presidential candidate that has an energy plan that doesn't include ripping up a giant swath of Alaska and dotting our coastline with metal monstrosities to suck out enough oil to last a few years...? Btw: We wouldn't get any of that oil for 10 years...?
America has been successful by being a leader in innovation over the last 100 years or so. I believe we can thrive by being the leader in "green" technologies. I believe we have a better chance with Barack Obama versus a guy who doesn't know how to send an email...
Update: I fixed the video, but I'll include a link to the clip, in case I screw it up...

SUN 8/24: Carnival, Doggies, Shakespeare, Newgrassy, Dance
Ay, carumba! Before it gets any later, here are some things going on today...
--------------------------------------------------------------
SUN 8/24
Noon to 6pm
Cambridge Carnival Parade
from Central Sq to Kendall Sq, Mass Ave to about 450 Main St, Cambridge
FREE
If you can't make it to Saturday's parade & party, there's another one in Cambridge.
SUN 8/24
7pm (Sun: 4pm)
"Romeo and Juliet"
at Gore Place, 52 Gore St, Waltham
FREE
A newish group called the "Lonesome Coyote Theater" presents a minimalist outdoor production of the classic play with no set or costumes. Does true love really need that stuff?
Update: I went last week, and this was exceptionally good! This is an affirmation that you don't need a web presence to be good!
The way it's presented brings the play to life in a way that speaks to a contemporary audience. I felt like I understood the play more than any other time seeing it live or on screen. (Unfortunately when they said "no costumes", the women were still wearing clothes...)
Tip: Bring a blanket or lawn chairs.
SUN 8/24
4pm to 6pm
"Dog Day Afternoon"
in Winthrop Park (corner of JFK and Mt. Auburn) Harvard Square
FREE
Bring your dog for a talk about doggie-friendly hiking places around Boston. Then there'll be a group walk around, which should be so organized with dozens of strange dogs. (Argh!) Contact the Globe Corner Bookstore in advance, and they can have a canine goodie bag for your friend.
Jenna Ringelheim, author of Best Hikes With Dogs: Boston and Beyond, will talk about her favorite dog hikes, discuss hike planning and safety, and answer questions about how all hikers can have a tail-wagging, good time.I didn't realize it, but there are a lot of dog-friendly businesses in Harvard Sq...
SUN 8/24
8pm
Aoife O'Donovan (and friends)
at Toad, 1912 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Porter Sq)
FREE
The lovely voice of Crooked Still (who are considered to be on the vanguard of bluegrass) does her own thing tonight with a band. I bet she's friendly with the band, but who knows if other friends are involved...
SUN 8/24

Rebound Sundays: "Lean Back"
at Phoenix Landing, 512 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$5 / 19+ / (FREE For Ladies Before 11pm)

DIY Lobster Roll
Yes, I actually made the lobster roll above!
My aunt is headed over, so I have to clean the house before I finish the weekly list. Below is a post I did for my friends at Bostonist. (I might've been more casual otherwise...)
It might be a perfect weekend to make some lobster rolls!
--------------------------------------------------------------
Homemade Lobster Roll
$6.32 per roll (w/ chips)
There's no reason to pay big money for a good lobster roll. With a little effort, the yumminess-to-dollar ratio can be high. Part of a lobster roll's beauty is that you simply eat it without getting your hands dirty. Just like other aspects of life, there can also be quite a bit of satisfaction in self-service.
Getting your lobster at a supermarket is fine, but who knows how long those tank-dwellers have been there? Take a look behind the store, and you might see a couple crustaceans on a cigarette break.
This is New England! There are plenty of places to get a fresh, lively lobba-lobba for your belly. Every Internet search engine sits waiting for someone to type "lobster market [your town]." You might pay a dollar or two more, but it will be worth it.
I picked up a 1.75-pounder at New Deal Fish Market in East Cambridge for $21.09 (at $12.99 per lb. -- vs. $11.99 at Shaw's). The service was great, and it's clear they care about good seafood. Our confidence level was high -- and well-rewarded.
The tail and claw pieces were cut into big chunks for bites of premium flavor, while the rest was given a rough chop that offered flavor dimension beyond simple uniformity of goodness. Only enough mayo was added to bind it together, and no celery pieces were added. A wee bit of celery leaves sat underneath for a hint of greens and added texture.
With total control over the meal, a generous yet neat amount of lobster salad was laid into a bed of lightly-toasted and slightly under-buttered (no one's perfect) hot dog buns (8-pack, $1.67). Like a bookworm-ish cousin, the bread's flavor added little to the party, but good-flavor times rolled on without giving it much thought. An 8.5oz bag of sea salt & vinegar Cape Cod potato chips ($2.50) matched superbly as a delightful side for a goog ol' lobster roll. The sweet, tender flavor joyfully lingered for the half-second until the next bite arrived.
A better lobster roll could be found, but very few can beat a homemade lobster made with love. Certainly no restaurant or shack can beat the price!
The prep and math behind the roll:
If harbor water isn't within a block of your heat source, be sure to salt your water. We like to add "aromatics" to the pot, but salt is the only necessity. Pantry items that went into the water included:
- a quartered onionThe greatness of lobster is best enjoyed with as little distraction as possible. A little flavor is added to the bath, so little else should end up in the roll.
- a couple stalks of celery (cut into a few pieces)
- a clove or two of garlic
- some peppercorns
- 2 bay leaves
- a halved lemon (squeezed into pot and dropped in)
Once the water is boiling, drop it in for 10 to 12 minutes depending on its size. After it's cool enough to handle, the fun part is next. Without making this a lengthy how-to: break off the tail and arms, let sections drain over the sink, and don't eat the stuff near the head. While some love the vibrantly green tomalley, it's not good lobster roll material. I crack open every nook and cranny where any meat can be found. The spindly legs have quite a bit of tasty meat, and every segment can be squeezed like a toothpaste tube.
It shouldn't be difficult to drop the scrumptious sea-bug into boiling water just as most people are comfortable killing any insect around the house. Once cooked, view it as abstractly as any other meat product. (Fried chicken, anyone?)
It can still be delicious if take the easy route. Shaw's will steam the lobster for you, and other markets might offer that service. Meat still needs to be removed, but you save time by shopping while the lobster is cooking. We strongly urge you not to buy the pre-steamed lobster -- there's probably a reason they cooked it, and it's not a good one. Smaller lobsters (1.5 lbs. or less) would be fine, but they start to get tough when bigger than 2 pounds.
Lobster: $21.09 +
hot dog buns: $1.67 +
potato chips: $2.50 = $25.28
Divided by 4 = $6.32 per roll.
If you want two rolls, it's $12.64 per person.

Featuring "many new songs, some covers, and maybe a couple of old tunes."

FRI 8/22 & SAT 8/23
10pm
ALVIS
at The Midway Cafe, 3496 Washington St, Jamaica Plain

This will be the most amazing, outta-control, boozalicious Elvis tribute show. Alvis (Allan Sheinfeld of The Spurs, etc) returns after a long, long absence (liver transplant technology?) to lead an all-star "F.T.W. Band" and back-up singers "Nutra-Sweet Sensations". I read that the Amazing Alvis will hit the stage around 11pm, but there might be an opener -- and you'll definitely want to get into the spirit with some cocktails/beer/paint thinner/whatever you like...

- No jerks, please.
SAT 8/23
1pm to 7pm
Boston Caribbean Carnival Parade
from MLK Blvd & Warren St to Franklin Park, Dorchester (Seaver St / Blue Hill Ave side)

I don't think you'll want to get up at dawn for the J'ouvert ceremony, so you can check out the parade at a more reasonable time... It's also the 35th anniversary of Boston Carnival.
...what to expect: "streams of vividly costumed, scantily clad masqueraders shaking their booties to DJs and steel-drum bands playing soca and calypso plus some spooge, reggae, salsa, and zouk"SAT 8/23

FRI 8/22: Morning Bike to Downtown
Hey, it looks like it'll be a beautiful day tomorrow. It starts a little early for my taste... I bet you could bike in on your own and still get some freebies whenever you show up at City Hall Plaza...
A Sneak Peek is probably coming tonight, but there might still be spots for Saturday's Wiffle Ball tournament.

Bike Friday
from Various Points in the Area to City Hall Plaza, Boston
FREE
If you are hesitant about riding your bicycle to work, this might be a good time to try it out. It won't get much safer than guided convoys escorted by Boston Police. They did this last month, and no one died...
Take a look at the map to see the closest starting point to you:
- Newton, Brookline, WatertownLooks like there's a free breakfast and some kind of bike expo at the end...
- Lexington, Arlington, Somerville, Cambridge
- Dorchester
- West Roxbury, Roslindale
- Brighton, Allston
- Jamaica Plain
Advance registration appreciated.

THUR 8/21: Ska, Folk, Activism, Old-Time Baseball, Movie Social
I know, I know! How did I miss The English Beat last week? I just can't say, but it doesn't take much planning. Email some friends (link to this post, haha) and go! There's actually lots of good free stuff to do tonight -- even beyond the four below.
--------------------------------------------------------------
THUR 8/21
5pm
The English Beat, Mieka Pauley
at City Hall Plaza, Boston (Govt Center)
FREE
There's at least one thing I like about WBOS, they sponsor a bunch of free concerts. It was sad to see that the Copley Sq series didn't return this year, but they still do alright. There's a good show right after work today.
Basically singer Dave Wakeling and dancer Ranking Roger will do a fine set of two-tone ska. Besides the English Beat biggies ("Save It for Later", "Mirror in the Bathroom", etc), they throw in the General Public hits too ("Tenderness", "I'll Take You There"). I heard they did a good job at the Hatch Shell / Earth Day show. The most excellent local singer-songwriter Mieka Pauley is opening, so you should get there as soon as you can!
THUR 8/21
7pm
"This is What Women Want" Kick-off
at YMCA Theater, 820 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
FREE
So after a little research, I've learned this isn't a seminar to assist lonely men. Cambridge's Center for New Words is one of the organizers of this project to magnify the voices of women during the presidential election. The website and the tour is an attempt to get women's issues and concerns into the larger public forum. This is the first event of a tour that will be held in the next couple months when and where the debates will take place. This is a chance to hear various speakers, and it seems that attendees will have a chance to speak as well.
From the Weekly List:
THUR 8/21
7pm
Old-Time Baseball
at St. Peter's Field, 57 Sherman St, Cambridge (near Fresh Pond)
FREE
A vintage baseball game was put together during the '94 baseball strike, and it's become an annual event. It's a casual evening of baseball with college players and occasionally a retired pro playing in vintage-style uniforms from various teams and eras.
I went last year and had a great time. I did talk to Johnny Pesky (one of the team managers) after the game, and he was awesome. People flocked to him, but he easily obliged my autograph request. "It won't buy you a cup of coffee," he said. Pesky is scheduled to be one of the managers again, and Lou Merloni is going to play.
A corporate sponsorship presents the game and will make a charitable donation to the Todd J. Schwartz Memorial Fund, which supports the Jimmy Fund Clinic. The concession proceeds might benefit the cause too; the sausage was darn good last year... It's not a bad idea to bring a blanket or a chair.
Raindate: FRI 8/22
THUR 8/21
6pm to 11pm
Inman Under The Stars: Movie Night & Neighborhood Social
at the East Cambridge Savings Bank's parking lot, 1310 Cambridge St., , between Hampshire and Cambridge Streets (Inman Sq)
FREE
They can't say it, but the hint is so obvious that it's Star Wars. It better be, because none of the 3 prequels could be described as "an inter-galactic adventure loved by all!" Performers from ImprovBoston's "Henchmen" show will be goofing around Inman Sq before the movie, and they do have some sci-fi material. The screening begins around 8pm, and there should be free popcorn and bottled water...
In case of rain, the event will be canceled.

Advance Notice, SAT 8/23: Wiffle Ball Tourney
9:30am to 12:30pm
WIFFLE Boston 2008
at City Hall Plaza, Boston (Govt Center)

I searched the Internet for about 30 seconds and couldn't find a mention of a "Boston Wiffle Ball champion". It's about time that some people can add that to their resume as 32 teams of 5 players will meet for a single elimination tournament at City Hall Plaza. (There will be a prize for winning.) I checked with one of the main dudes at Social Boston Sports, and there were 8 spots still open as of this morning...
By my count, there will be 5 "single-elimination" rounds of 7-inning or 45 minutes (whichever is first) games. I get the sense that the "fields" will be narrow enough that reasonably no idiot will need to dive onto brick *and* hits will happen. Teams must be coed also.
To sign up, you'll need:
- a team nameI'm no lawyer, so I didn't bother to read the waiver that you need to sign before playing. Get there at 9:30am for registration, and the fun begins at 10:15 after Mayor Mumbles throws out the first pitch.
- names, emails, genders, and t-shirt sizes of all the players
Spectators and early losers can enjoy games (e.g. "home run derby", "fast pitch challenge") and other entertainment.
This did not escape my eagle eye: "Following the tournament, Social Boston Sports will be hosting a post-game celebration in close proximity to City Hall Plaza."

WED 8/20: Nasty Love, Free Rock, Puppet Show, All-You-Can-Eat
I actually got into an event last night, and it was a blogger party at Bella Luna restaurant at Milky Way Lounge. At least, that's how I always thought about it; the food has been great every time I've eaten there although I'm usually heading downstairs for other reasons. I'll say more soon, but their new menu is awesome. The fancy fried mozzarella ("Half Moon" or something like that...) is simply the best I've ever had, and it's probably the best in Boston. (If anyone there is reading this, it was good to meet you.)
After enjoying much red wine last night, friggin' WGBH has to follow "Morning Edition" with the 1812 Overture?!?! Ah, my head...
I might have another short post about a free waffle ball tournament happening on Saturday, but here's the link.
(I love the variety below...)

WED 8/20
9:30pm
"Trans Entities: The Nasty Love of Papi and Wil"
at Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St, Cambridge (Harvard Sq)
$10 / 18+
Every third Wednesday, Cinemental presents the "best of independent queer media". It's been sometimes difficult to find out about what is actually screening, and finally they have a dedicated spot on the web, besides announcements on Truth Serum.
It seems like a lot is packed in about an hour of running time... Besides 3 "undirected" sex scenes, Papi and Wil frankly discuss their trans-gendered relationship in what will probably be a more-than-just-thought-provoking manner. The exciting part of tonight's program is that they're attending to participate in the post-film discussion.
One of my two favorite sex columnists Tristan Taormino (of Pucker Up and Thomas Pynchon's niece) said about "Trans Entities":
It's the best transporn film I've ever seen, mostly because of the way we get to know the couple through Diamond's intimate, interview-driven story. Frank, articulate, and madly in love, Papi and Wil talk about being kinky, polyamorous people of color -- from BDSM to spirituality, no topic is off-limits, including their genders.
So there you go...
WED 8/20
Electric Laser People (11pm), The Motion Sick (10pm), Where the Land Meets the Sea (9pm)
at Church, 69 Kilmarnock St, Boston (Fenway)
FREE / 21+
Night #3 of The Motion Sick residency theme is "Flash" Wednesday. And they wrote a song called "Aquaman's Lament" [mp3] who is a superfriend of The Flash, so that's pretty damn cool.
The Sox are in Baltimore, so parking won't be a problem -- but the T is a low-emission way to free music...
From the Weekly List:
WED 8/20
6:30 pm
Alice Hunter: Puppet Show & "Vertigo"
at Raymond Park, about 200 Upland Rd, Cambridge (near Porter Sq)
FREE
Anything that is preceded by a puppet show makes me laugh, even if it's a Hitchcock movie. The brief description I read said it's "an interactive, aquatic puppet show" followed by cartoons and the film.
Rain Date: WED 8/27
WED 8/20
6pm to 9pm
All-you-can-eat Crayfish Party
at Ikea Restaurant & Cafe, upper level, 1 Ikea Way, Stoughton
$9.99 / $4.99 Ages 12 and under
This is for those hungry on the South Shore and/or need some furniture. Besides crayfish, there will be "cheeses, crispbread, and soup or salad." (And you have to think Swedish meatballs too, right?)
Beverages and dessert not included. (Adult beverages also available.)

TUES 8/19: Prez Talk, Classical, Rock, Folk
I tried to go to "The Big Lebowski" Party at Coolidge Corner Theatre, but it was sold out when I got there at 6:59pm... So I went across the street and had a white Russian... I can't believe I wore my bowling shirt...
George, the Coolidge's program director, said to me, "There's next year."
Thanks, George.

TUES 8/19
6pm to 8pm
"Presidential Politics: Campaigning and the Media"
at (probably) 190 High St, 4th Fl, Boston (Financial District)
FREE w/ RSVP
Former radio host and current Tufts professor Michael Goldman is the first speaker in a 3-part series on the presidential campaign ("as a way to understand the world around us") sponsored by Boston Cares. According to the blurb, the discussion will cover:
the role the media plays within presidential campaigns and the role it has in shaping our perceptions of the candidates. Lastly, the evening will end with a discussion about the two presidential candidates and the campaign to date. When you RSVP they'll let you know the exact address, but most of these talks are held at their office. (It looks like there is still room...)
TUES 8/19
6pm
"Music in the Park": Strasbourg Youth Orchestra
at Christopher Columbus Park, Boston (North End/Waterfront)
FREE
It might be a nice evening to listen to some music by the water. A bunch of youngish, French musicians have been in town for a few days, and it appears they're playing a mix of classical pieces and some contemporary symphonic works.
I didn't know Strasbourg was Boston's sister city; it turns out that we have 8 "sister cities"... (WTF?!?)
TUES 8/19
9:30pm
Band In Boston Residency
Beasts of England, Anthems, Greg (of Pending Disappointment), Polarbaron, Emeen Z
at PA's Lounge, 345 Somerville Ave, Somerville (Union Sq)
$7 -- 21+ / $10 -- 18+
I put up a short post about this series of Band In Boston anniversary shows yesterday. I listened to every band playing tonight, and there's some damn good music with some interesting variety! I guess the idea is to trust Jen and Andy's good taste, if you don't listen to their every podcast. But you should listen...
From the Weekly List:
TUES 8/19
9pm
Neil Cleary's Doozy, James Kochalka Superstar, David Kamm, Jesse Popp, MC Mr. Napkins, The Artificial Hearts
at Lizard Lounge/Cambridge Common, 1667 Mass Ave, Cambridge (between Harvard Sq & Porter Sq)
$10 / 21+
Of Neil Cleary, I liked this snippet from All Music Guide; I'd want to say something similar:
Look at it this way: y’know that guy that all of Aimee Mann and Liz Phair’s breakup songs are about? Okay, imagine if he wrote those songs about himself, but he didn’t quite get what they were so ticked off about: that’s a fair approximation of the lyrical thrust of this album. John Hiatt, Nick Lowe and Randy Newman have all toyed with this persona as well, and echoes of all three waft through these dozen rootsy power pop tunes.James Kochalka is a cartoonist from Burlington, VT; but he wrote one of my favorite songs called "Hockey Monkey". It's truly a gem! It should be a fun show with some comedy, some more music, and a funny musician (MC Mr. Napkins).
I still maintain this will be an awesome show!
TUES 8/19
9:30pm to Midnight
Peter Mulvey
at Atwoods Tavern, 877 Cambridge St, Cambridge (near Inman & Kendall Sq)
$10
WTF? There's almost never a cover at Atwoods! Well, Peter Mulvey is passing through town and he's worth it. Apparently this songwriter spent a couple years in Boston and often played in the T. (He recorded a whole CD of cover songs at the Davis Sq station in '01.) You might not have tipped him, so pay up for a night of songs from his rich rasp over sweet guitar work.
TUES 8/19
10pm
The Sneaks
at Middle East - Corner, 480 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
FREE
There's some free pop-rock too.
